Beach House, Lympstone, Devon

Welcome to Beach House

Beach House in Lympstone has been a much-loved family home since it was built in the 1860s; and now it's ready for your holiday by the sea. It is directly on the Exe estuary, which flows from Exeter down to the World Heritage Jurassic coastline of south Devon. In the district of East Devon, it is just a short distance from the South West Coast Path.

You could not be closer to the water – Beach House IS the sea wall! Every room looks across half a mile of beautiful tidal water towards Powderham Castle and the Haldon Hills. The sunsets have to be seen to be believed. At dusk, the sound of the sea birds vies with the romantic clinking of halyards on the masts of visiting sailing boats moored on the estuary.

Lympstone is one of the prettiest villages in the area, with a picturesque pier and harbour. Beach House is approached via an atmospheric cobbled path which leads down to old fishing cottages. From the front door it’s just a short walk to The Globe, The Swan, The Redwing, the little local Post Office, a great village shop with its own butchery and a café which serves the best hot chocolate and home-made cake!

What Guests say about Beach House...

Our second visit was even better than our first. We had great fun fishing for crabs over the garden wall and caught nine in three days!  We met a friendly cat who watched us every time. We discovered that crabs like raw bacon. I think the friendly cat wanted some too.

I enjoyed staying at Beach House because it was really pretty. I enjoyed looking out of the windows and I drew lots of pictures of the view from my bedroom. It's amazing to be so close to the sea. It was great fun walking up and down the harbour wall and watching the sea birds. The village shops are very nice and the location is very peaceful and friendly. I would recommend it and I can't wait to go back in the summer when it's nice and sunny. (February 2007)

Beach House was cool! The beds were very comfy - I slept in two of them! I won the colouring contest at the local pub!

Had a great week here, mostly sunny and warm.  We loved the house especially lying in bed watching the tides come in and out.  Food is good in both pubs, excellent fish and chips at the Globe – very popular.  Do not be deceived by its outward appearance.  Go to Exeter on the train, get off at Exeter Central and you walk through Gandy Street to main High Street, go to see Shell world wild life photographic exhibition in the museum in Gandy Street.  Amazing photos.  Eat lunch down on the quay, sit in the cathedral and if you are lucky someone will be singing.  It cost us £6 for a return ticket for 2 people on the train.  We hope to come again.

What a great location! We had not visited SE Devon before, and it proved to be a very handy base for us to explore the area. The house itself is nicely appointed and we were very comfortable. The weather was superb throughout, with wonderful sunsets most evenings. We enjoyed watching the boats and birdlife in the estuary (particularly the turquoise Kingfisher) and were pleasantly surprised when a Seal swam past the patio one evening!

A wonderful stay during some of the best weather this summer.  Saw herons, cormorants, a kingfisher and even a seal, all from the Sea Room!  Great National Trust properties nearby – especially enjoyed Castle Drogo and Coleton Fishacre.  Had a special supper at Puffing Billy – great food and service – need to book in advance.  Friendly village, the PO and shop sell everything you could need.  Could sit and look at the view all day.

Wonderful location and the most fantastic weather.  We have fallen in love with the beautiful view.  Some great doggie walks down on the beach. An entertaining evening spent in the Redwing with the landlord on the karaoke singing The House of the Rising Sun......despite this the seafood platter was excellent!  Great days out in Salcombe and Topsham and so much more to discover yet of this glorious county Devon.  Memorable holiday, many thanks.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days here in Beach House.  The house is, of course, fabulous with its amazing views and excellent design and furnishing.  We discovered Branscombe beach which is now officially our favourite beach in England (our previous being Woolacombe in N. Devon).  The village is special though we didn’t manage to get to the pubs this time.  Thanks for giving us a lovely holiday break.  We look forward to returning next year.

In the words of WH Davies:-

“What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare?”

- and that is just what we have done here at Beach House.  We have stared at the turning of the tides and the bobbing of the boats and birds.  We stopped and stared.  We love Beach House and, never having visited Devon before, we love the place too.  We are determined to return.  For those with very young children we recommend Bicton Gardens – wonderful miniature train and beautiful gardens.  The Donkey Sanctuary is a must, Exmouth and Sidmouth beaches (the former sandy, the latter a nightmare of a pebbly beach..but beautiful).  My favourite boat is Grace – she’s an elegant lady albeit getting on – maybe a bit like me!

Fantastic views, many sunsets that will be remembered for a long time (plenty of photographs).  Great friendly village and general areas full of places to go.  Many thanks.  PS No luck with the fishing!

We had a great time here at the Beach House.  My boys had a blast crabbing off the back sea wall.  Beautiful views and sunsets.  The village was just what we had pictured England would look like.  Everyone was so friendly and the house was amazing. We hope our 2 years here in the UK will be as great as this last week has been.  Thank you so very much!

Lovely lovely lovely.  I had a great 50th with family and friends.  Aged folks sat and watched the estuary views for ages.  Thanks for everything – we will come again.

Beach House certainly has the wow factor – great location, wonderful views and beautifully furnished.  We loved the village atmosphere and ale at the Swan the Globe (Thursday night especially!).   We also loved Powderham Castle, Bicton Park and the miniature pony centre.  Hoping we can make a return visit sometime.

2 days of glorious walking and blistering heat to return to magical sunsets and memories of sailing from Lympstone.  The LCD TV was a first for us and and worked well with DVDs (after start-up groaning from the player).  There were 4 boats moored on the estuary and one was a Drascombe Staffie, a coincidence because yesterday we will be visiting the original builder.  A most welcome stay – many thanks!

Just to say thank you for the loan of your beautiful house!  We had a lovely few days in Lympstone.  Many thanks.
